Washing Cashmere: When More Moth Holes Might Appear

Washing Cashmere: When More Moth Holes Might Appear - Cashmere Circle

Cashmere is a luxurious and delicate fabric that requires special care, especially when it comes to washing. While gentle cleaning is necessary to keep cashmere looking its best, the act of washing can actually cause more harm than good if proper precautions are not taken. One of the biggest risks of washing cashmere is the potential for more moth holes to develop.

Moth larvae feast on protein fibers like wool and cashmere. The agitation and moisture from washing can make cashmere more appetizing for moths. When cashmere is washed, the protective scales on the fibers get disturbed, exposing more of the protein underneath. This makes the cashmere even more vulnerable to moth damage.

In addition, washing can loosen fibers and cause excess pilling on the surface of cashmere garments. These pills and loose bits then become attractive nesting spots for moths to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the moth larvae can start munching away on the cashmere, leaving behind holes.

To reduce the chances of developing more moth holes from washing, it is important to take preventative steps:
  1.  Inspect for moth eggs or larvae before washing. If detected, treat garment before washing.
  2. Store cleaned cashmere properly sealed in breathable garment bags. Use cedar blocks or sachets as a natural moth deterrent.
  3. Limit washing to only when truly needed. Frequent washing degrades delicate cashmere over time.
  4. Consider professional cleaning for delicate cashmere items prone to holes.

With proper care and washing methods, cashmere can maintain its beauty and avoid unnecessary moth damage. But increased washing can lead to more inviting conditions for moths, putting beloved cashmere garments at risk for more unsightly holes. Gently hand washing on an as-needed basis is the safest approach for preserving cashmere.
